adventures, finally.

Last night I had dinner with a friend from the states who's in town for a Jewish educator's workshop. On our way to dinner, we were walking down Ben Yehuda (pedestrian-only touristy street) and I commented upon a big rainbow flag hanging over our heads.

She said, "oh yes, that's the Jerusalem Open House, haven't you been there yet?"

I hadn't, so she took me up to see the first and only gl(bt) community center in Jerusalem. We got a tour from a very sweet and cute Israeli girl - there's a hang-out space with couches, a meeting room, and a library which also has a little store where you can buy very many rainbowy things. I got a schedule of events for the rest of this month, and plan to hit a special showing of an Almodovar movie and kabbalat shabbat in a couple of weeks.

Also, we got told about an upcoming LeatherDyke party at the queer bar in J'lem, and that every Tuesday night is women's night at the bar. I'm not going to the party because I have *nothing* to wear and they're enforcing the dress code, but Tuesday night I'm totally going dancing with Israeli girls! It should be lots of fun.

So, I'm slowly emerging from my nap-centric existence, and might soon actually have a social life. Go me.

Too hot for leather

It is much too hot in Jerusalem to wear leather (unless it is just straps which I don't want to think about) but dancing sounds like fun. Does "Kababalat shabbat" have any relationship to the kabballa thing that Madonna and Demi Moore are espousing? Explain please for those of us who don't know.
Is the area where you are experiencing any of the protesting we read about in the papers here? Is Netanya where you were a couple of years ago?
Anyway - keep posting. I am enjoying keeping up. Love Auntie Jay

Re: Too hot for leather

I didn't go to the party because I had no leather to wear - not even straps (unless you count the ones on my shoes).

kabbalat shabbat is the friday night prayer service welcoming the sabbath - it's generally full of songs and very lovely.
it's related to the 'kabbalah' of madonna only linguistically (the root words are the same).

Jerusalem is full of orange - the color of the protesters, and there will be a big march early next week. Yes, Netanya is where i was living last time I was here, but because I'm living in such a media void (my apartment has neither a working television or radio) i didn't hear about this last event until a few days after it happened.

love,
me
